DJ Eclipse has a discussion with J57 and Spit Gemz about the past 15 years of music marketing and selling records. In the 1990s, the majority of aspiring artists were looking to sign a major record deal, which was like playing the lottery. When Fat Beats opened up shop, they showed independent artists how to market and sell music themselves. Artists could sell 30,000 units of a single 12″ record. The independent scene grew quickly and artists were soon touring the world with out major financial backing. Currently, the independent scene is alive and well, but physical albums are scarce due to ease of downloading music. Successful artists are now capitalizing off the Internet with music videos and engaging fans on social media.
