Do The Knowledge is the latest podcast collaboration between a staple in the New York Hip Hop scene, DJ Eclipse, and Boston-based author Brian Coleman. The first episode has been released, with the focus on Eric B. & Rakim and their 30th Anniversary of the classic album Paid In Full. The podcast consists of original interview tapes blended with music discussed in the interviews as well as the original music that was sampled. The never-before-heard Rakim interview was conducted by Coleman in the early 2000s and appeared in Coleman’s first two books, Rakim Told Me (2005) and Check The Technique Vol. 1: Liner Notes for Hip-Hop Junkies (2007).
Coleman explains “I’ve always wanted to bring my interview tapes fully to life and this is the ultimate way.” Eclipse goes on to say “I own all of Brian’s books and his dedication to research and compiling information to document the music that we grew up on mirrors how I approach mixing.”
In this 21-minute “Paid In Full” tribute, Rakim speaks on his early years as a rapper and the birth of his most popular hits “Eric B. Is President”, “I Ain’t No Joke”, “Move The Crowd”, and more. DJ Eclipse blends in some sampled source tunes such as Bobby Byrd’s “I Know You Got Soul”, The JBs’ “Pass The Peas”, Return To Forever’s “Flight Of The Newborn”, Dennis Edwards’ “Don’t Look Any Further”, and others.
Purchased Coleman’s latest book, Check the Technique Volume 2: More Liner Notes For Hip-Hop Junkies (2014).
